Marketing Mystery Moments

How to Create a Stronger Connection With Your Audience When You Speak

Why choosing the right content matters more than sharing everything you know.

Many people think speaking in front of a group is about educating your audience. If you're using speaking to grow your business, education is only part of the goal. You also want your audience to understand how you can help them and why your solution may be right for them.

I know this frustration firsthand. Early on, I was putting a lot of effort into my presentations, sharing valuable information and receiving wonderful feedback. But that wasn't translating into clients.

Something needed to change.

When I restructured my Signature Talk to focus less on how much I could teach and more on connecting with my audience, the results changed too. Instead of wondering why people weren't taking the next step, prospective clients started coming to me.

One of the biggest lessons I learned was that, as experts, it's easy to fall into the trap of wanting to teach everything we know. But a Signature Talk isn't about randomly sharing great information. Every story, example and teaching point should have a purpose. It should connect with something the audience is experiencing and help them see how you can support them.

That's why I help my clients build a framework rather than a script. We intentionally choose the stories, examples and teaching points that will make the strongest connection with that particular audience and build the talk around them.

You can still educate. In fact, you should.

But the goal isn't for people to leave thinking, "Wow, they know a lot."

You want them to leave thinking, "They understand what I'm going through, and they may be able to help me."

And that's where real connection begins.

Your Marketing Mastery Takeaway

A great Signature Talk isn't about how much information you share. It's about how well your audience connects with what you're sharing.

Before your next presentation, review your stories, examples and teaching points. Ask yourself: Does this help my audience recognize their challenges, understand what's possible and see how I can help?

If it doesn't, you may not need it in your talk.
